Hyundai ix20 - Matrix replacement?

This is the first sketch released of an upcoming new Hyundai model called the Hyundai ix20. Despite the x in its name which so far has been given to new Hyundai SUV models, the ix20 is actually a B-segment MPV, according to Hyundai at least. This could possibly be a replacement for the seriously aging Hyundai Matrix but I’m not totally sure, but what’s probably confirmed is that its a Hyundai counterpart to the Kia Venga. The Hyundai ix20 will be displayed at the Paris Motorshow 2010 on the 30th of September 2010 but I bet a few images will be released in between this sketch and the show debut.

Hyundai's "Fluidic Sculpture" design language makes the pint-sized ix20 MPV, which debuted back in October at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, a real looker. To our American eyes, the ix20 is far too small to be classed a multi-purpose vehicle, but attaching the MPV moniker is sure to capture the attention of European buyers interested in a B-Segment vehicle with people-hauling capabilities. With that said, Hyundai officially calls the ix20 a "modern mini-MPV."

The ix20 comes in three trim levels – Classic, Active and Style – and is offered with four engine choices ranging from a 1.4-liter gasser to the top spec 1.4-liter diesel. Prices in the UK range from £11,595 ($18,610 U.S. at the current exchange rate) to £15,095 ($24,227 U.S.) All models offer electronic stability control, six air bags and air conditioning. The range-topping Style adds in a panoramic glass roof, fog lights, parking sensors, Bluetooth capability and more.

Why should Americans be interested in the ix20? Well, because Hyundai spokesman Dan Bedore has said that the automaker has no plans to bring the ix20, "to the U.S. market at this time," but we suspect that Hyundai will keep a close eye on some other B-Segment players like the Ford Fiesta and the Mazda2 before deciding whether for sure if the ix20 will ever be U.S.-bound.
